Most guests find a property on Airbnb or Booking.com, and those platforms do a genuinely useful job of gathering options in one place. But the property you found is usually available to book directly too, and the two routes are not identical. Here is what actually differs.
Booking platforms charge a service fee on top of the nightly rate, and it is added at checkout rather than shown in the search results. It is the single clearest difference: booking direct removes that layer.
Owners also pay commission on platform bookings, which is why a direct rate can often be better without the property earning less. Both sides gain from cutting out the intermediary.
On a platform, messages route through the platform's system and are subject to its rules — which is why hosts often cannot share a phone number or address until after booking.
Booking direct means dealing with the manager from the start. You can ask specific questions before committing: whether the bedrooms are genuinely separate, how many steps there are, what the parking situation is, whether the neighbourhood is quiet at night. Answers to these arrive faster when nothing is being filtered.
This is where the difference tends to show. If an air conditioning unit fails in August, a platform can process a refund but cannot send anyone to fix it. A local manager can.
We are based in Marsaxlokk and manage properties across Malta and Gozo, so guest support is genuinely local rather than a call centre elsewhere. That matters most in the situations you did not plan for.
Direct bookings allow arrangements platforms cannot easily accommodate: an early check-in around a morning flight, a late departure, a slightly longer stay than the calendar shows, or an extra cot. None of these are guaranteed — they depend on the property and the calendar — but there is someone to ask.
In fairness, platforms offer things a direct booking does not. Their review systems aggregate feedback from many guests, and their payment and dispute processes are standardised.
The reasonable answer is to use both. Research on the platforms, where reviews and comparison are easy. Then check whether the property or its manager takes direct bookings before you commit.
Our properties are listed on the major platforms, and they are also bookable directly through our own booking site with live availability and secure online payment. Direct bookings come with our best available rates and put you in touch with our team from the moment you book rather than after you arrive.
If you have found one of our properties elsewhere, it is worth checking our direct rate before confirming.
