Where to Stay in Malta: Choosing the Right Area for Your Trip

Malta is small enough that nowhere is truly far from anywhere else, but the islands are dense and traffic is real. Where you base yourself shapes your trip more than the map suggests. Here is an honest guide to the main options.

Sliema and Gzira

The most convenient base for a first visit. Sliema has a long seafront promenade, extensive shopping, plenty of restaurants and frequent ferries across the harbour to Valletta. Transport connections are good in every direction.

What it is not is picturesque. Sliema is a modern, built-up urban area. Choose it for convenience rather than charm, and be aware that construction is a constant feature of this part of the island.

St Julian's and Paceville

St Julian's has the highest concentration of restaurants and nightlife, centred on Spinola Bay, with Paceville immediately adjacent as the main nightlife district.

The distinction matters. Spinola Bay is pleasant in the evening; Paceville is loud until very late. If you are travelling with family or want to sleep, check exactly how close a property sits to Paceville rather than relying on the general area name.

Valletta

Staying inside the capital is a genuinely different experience — living within a fortified city with extraordinary architecture, quiet in the evenings once the day visitors leave. Excellent for culture, food and atmosphere.

Practicalities to consider: Valletta is built on a hill and there are many steps. Driving and parking inside the city are difficult. It is superb if you are happy to walk and use the ferries.

The Three Cities

Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua sit across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. Historic, atmospheric and considerably quieter than the main tourist areas, with a direct ferry to the capital. A good choice for travellers who want character over convenience.

Marsaxlokk and the southeast

Marsaxlokk is a working fishing village on the southeast coast, known for its painted luzzu boats and its waterfront market. Sunday is the main market day, combining the fish market with a much larger general market, and it is at its best early in the morning before the coaches arrive.

The southeast is where you find St Peter's Pool and a coastline that stays quieter than the north. It suits travellers who want everyday Maltese life rather than a resort. It is also where we are based, so we know it well.

St Paul's Bay, Bugibba and Qawra

The main resort area in the north. Plenty of accommodation, restaurants and organised activity, generally at lower prices than Sliema or St Julian's. Straightforward and good value, if not especially atmospheric. Convenient for boat trips and for reaching the Gozo ferry.

Mellieħa and the north

Closest to Malta's better sandy beaches, including Mellieħa Bay. Quieter and more spread out, with a village core on a hill above the bay. Better with a car, though bus connections exist. Well placed for the Gozo ferry at Ċirkewwa.

Mdina and Rabat

Inland, central and historic. Mdina is the old silent city and Rabat sits immediately outside it. Central for touring the island by car, quiet in the evenings, and away from the coast — which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you want.

Gozo

Gozo is a different pace: greener, slower, more rural, with excellent walking and diving. Reached by ferry from Ċirkewwa or by fast ferry from Valletta.

Treat it as a destination rather than a base for seeing Malta. Day-tripping to Malta from Gozo eats a lot of time. If you have a week or more, splitting your stay between the two islands works well.

A practical suggestion

For a first trip of under a week, base yourself once rather than moving. Sliema for convenience, Valletta for atmosphere, the southeast or Three Cities for something more local. For longer trips, splitting between Malta and Gozo is worth the effort.
